Why official recommendations differ
Video bitrate depends on the codec, frame rate, HDR format, scene complexity, audio, and compression choices. One service can deliver acceptable 4K at a lower average bitrate than another. Live sports may require more consistent delivery than a pre-encoded movie because fast motion and real-time production leave less room for optimization.
Netflix currently recommends 3 Mbps for 720p, 5 Mbps for 1080p, and 15 Mbps for 4K. YouTube lists an approximate sustained speed of 20 Mbps for 4K playback. Apple recommends at least 25 Mbps for 4K in the Apple TV app. None of those numbers means that every 4K stream constantly consumes exactly that rate.

Watching normally relies mainly on download speed. Upload capacity matters more when you:
- broadcast a live stream;
- use video calls while others watch;
- back up photos or large files;
- upload security-camera footage;
- use cloud gaming or remote-access tools.
A speed test may show a large download number but a much smaller upload result. If buffering starts only during cloud backups or video meetings, limited upload capacity or router queueing can still be the cause.
Internet plan speed is not television speed
An advertised 300 Mbps plan describes the connection delivered to the home under specified conditions. Your streaming device may receive far less because of:
- distance from the router;
- walls, floors, metal, or cabinets;

Packet loss
