1. Establish a clean baseline before changing settings
Run a short, repeatable test instead of relying on memory.
- Choose one supported device and one legal streaming service.
- Pause downloads, cloud backups, games, video calls, and other heavy traffic.
- Record the time, Wi-Fi or Ethernet connection, selected video quality, and whether the title is live or on demand.
- Test the same title for several minutes with the VPN disconnected.
- Measure download speed, latency if your test provides it, and whether playback buffers.
- Connect the VPN and repeat with the same device, location, and quality.
- Repeat once at a different time before deciding that the provider is permanently slow.
Netflix says its app can check connection speed on a TV-connected device and lists 15 Mbps or higher for 4K UHD. YouTube’s device guidance lists approximate sustained speeds of 20 Mbps for 4K UHD, 5 Mbps for 1080p, 2.5 Mbps for 720p, and 1.1 Mbps for 480p. These are service-specific reference points, not a promise that a speed-test result guarantees smooth playback. Leave headroom for other devices and normal variation.

2. Use a nearby, ordinary server
Distance increases round-trip time and can add more network handoffs. Start with a server near your actual location or the service’s legitimate home market, subject to the provider’s terms. Test two or three nearby locations rather than assuming the first “fastest” label is accurate for your ISP.
Avoid choosing a far-away country simply to change a catalog or live-sports offer. A VPN may change an IP address, but it cannot grant territorial rights, a local subscription, or a valid home area. A server can be geographically close and still busy. If the VPN app shows load or latency, compare a less-congested nearby option. Keep the test fair: do not compare a local VPN server against a distant one and call the result a protocol improvement.
3. Test the provider’s standard protocol
VPN protocols trade connection behavior, speed, compatibility, and transport. Use the provider’s default or automatic option first. If the app supports more than one protocol, change only that setting and repeat the same test.
ExpressVPN’s current troubleshooting guidance recommends trying its Automatic option first and then lists provider-specific alternatives when Automatic cannot connect. Multi-hop, double VPN, obfuscation, specialty routes, and extra filtering can add work or distance. An encrypted tunnel cannot repair a weak signal. YouTube recommends checking the connection near the TV, reducing interference, minimizing other devices, and trying another connection when video buffers. Apply the same logic with the VPN test:
- Compare Ethernet with Wi-Fi where practical.
- Test near the router, then at the normal viewing position.
- Pause large downloads, backups, and other streams.
- Restart the device and router once, then retest.
- Install pending operating-system and VPN-app updates from official sources.
- Test the same VPN on a second supported device to separate device limits from account or network limits.
If the VPN is fast on a phone but slow on a television, the TV, Wi-Fi band, router placement, app version, or device VPN implementation deserves attention. Do not buy a new streaming box until the comparison identifies a hardware or support limitation.
6. Check router-based VPN limits
A VPN installed on a router encrypts traffic for several devices, but the router must process that tunnel while also handling Wi-Fi, NAT, firewalling, and other work. Older hardware or a firmware implementation may have much lower VPN throughput than the internet plan.
Run three comparisons: the streaming device without a VPN, the same device with a supported native VPN app, and the device behind the router tunnel. If only the router path is slow, check the router vendor’s supported firmware, tunnel protocol, CPU/throughput documentation, and simultaneous-device load. 7. Choose a sustainable quality and buffer setting
If the VPN leaves less headroom, selecting Auto or a lower quality can prevent repeated rebuffering. YouTube allows viewers to change quality manually; its support documentation also explains that the player adapts to connection conditions. A stable 1080p stream is usually better than an unstable 4K stream.
Live video is less forgiving than on-demand video because a player has less room to build a buffer. YouTube’s latency guidance notes that lower latency can increase buffering because the read-ahead buffer is smaller. If a lawful live stream offers a normal/default latency choice, use it while diagnosing stability unless low delay is essential.

Test another legal title or service on the same route. If Netflix, YouTube, and another service all slow down only with the VPN, investigate the VPN path. If one service or one title fails while the others remain stable, look at service status, title availability, account rules, device support, or a provider-side CDN path.
