Last verified: August 3, 2026. This diagnostic workflow was reviewed against the linked Fire TV and network documentation; Settings labels can vary by Fire OS version, device generation and router.
“Connected to Wi-Fi” only means the Fire TV has joined the local router. It does not prove that the router has internet access, that DNS is working, or that a streaming service is available.
Open Settings → Network and use Amazon’s Network Status tool or Network Diagnostics option. It separately checks the Fire TV-to-router connection and the router-to-internet connection, which is the fastest way to decide what to restart or escalate.
Table of Contents
Read the symptom before changing settings
| Result | Likely problem area |
|---|---|
| Fire TV cannot join the Wi-Fi network | Password, signal, security compatibility, router |
| Connected to router but internet check fails | Modem, router WAN, ISP, DNS |
| Internet check passes but every app fails | Fire TV clock/software, account, DNS, outage |
| Only one app fails | App cache/data, account, service outage |
| Streaming works but buffers | Wi-Fi quality, household demand, service performance |
| Other devices also have no internet | Modem, router, or ISP—not the Fire TV app |
| Fire TV works on phone hotspot only | Home router, DNS, filtering, or ISP path |
Do not factory-reset Fire TV until you have proved that the fault remains on this device across more than one network.
1. Run Fire TV Network Status
Amazon’s Network Status tool is available under Settings → Network. During an “Unable to connect” error, compatible software can also show Network Diagnostics.
The tool can report:
- connection between Fire TV and the router;
- connection between the router and the internet;
- recommendations for detected problems;
- download-speed results on some devices;
- advanced network details and data usage on compatible models.
If the router connection fails, focus on Wi-Fi. If the router link passes but internet fails, restart the home-network equipment and check the ISP. If both pass, test applications and account status.
2. Check another device on the same network
Use a phone or computer on the same Wi-Fi name—not mobile data—to open two unrelated websites or legitimate streaming services.
- If they also fail, the problem is upstream of Fire TV.
- If they work, continue with Fire TV-specific checks.
- If only one streaming provider fails on every device, check that provider’s status or account.
A single successful cached webpage is weak evidence. Test more than one destination.
3. Restart the modem and router in order
Amazon’s network restart sequence is:
- Unplug power from both modem and router for several minutes.
- Reconnect the modem first.
- Wait until it reconnects to the internet.
- Reconnect the router.
- Wait until Wi-Fi is fully available.
- Restart Fire TV and other affected devices.
Some households use one combined modem/router or an optical network terminal plus a router. Do not unplug fiber connectors or reset provider equipment to factory defaults. Restart only the power as permitted by the ISP.
4. Restart Fire TV without erasing it
Use Settings → My Fire TV or Device & Software → Restart. If menus are frozen, our Fire TV restart guide includes Amazon’s supported remote-button method.
A normal restart does not remove apps or accounts. Reset to Factory Defaults is different and should not be used for routine network troubleshooting.
5. Forget and reconnect to the Wi-Fi network
When the saved network profile or password has changed:
- Open Settings → Network.
- Highlight the home network.
- Use the on-screen option to forget or remove it; the button varies by model.
- Select the network again.
- Enter the Wi-Fi password carefully.
The Wi-Fi password is not necessarily the Amazon account password. Confirm the network name to avoid joining a similarly named guest or extender network.
Amazon’s current setup hub notes that hidden networks are not supported for relevant Fire TV setup flows. Broadcasting a unique network name during diagnosis is safer than relying on undocumented manual workarounds.
6. Improve the Fire TV-to-router link
Move the router and Fire TV closer temporarily, or reposition the Fire TV with a compatible HDMI extender so it is not shielded behind the television. Keep dense metal objects and crowded wireless equipment away.
Test the Wi-Fi bands the exact model supports. Do not assume every Fire TV works with 6 GHz, every 5 GHz channel, WPA3-only security, or a new combined-band feature. Check the model’s Amazon specifications.
If Ethernet is supported, a compatible Amazon or manufacturer-approved adapter can separate Wi-Fi interference from internet-service problems. Ethernet does not fix an ISP outage.
7. Test with a phone hotspot briefly
A controlled hotspot test is diagnostic:
- Enable a phone hotspot with a temporary strong password.
- Connect Fire TV long enough to open a legal low-bandwidth service or check for network status.
- Disconnect and remove the hotspot profile after testing.
If Fire TV works on the hotspot but not home Wi-Fi, investigate the home router, filtering, DNS, or ISP path. If it fails on both networks, the Fire TV, app, account, or software becomes more likely.
Watch mobile-data charges and plan limits. Do not stream 4K as a connectivity test.
8. Check DNS and router filtering carefully
DNS converts service names into network addresses. Amazon’s connected-device guidance says that when the device reaches the router but Prime Video still reports internet errors—and the service works on another network—the ISP should check whether DNS traffic on port 53 is blocked.
Before changing DNS manually:
- confirm several apps or websites fail;
- test another device and another network;
- disable only filtering controls you own and understand;
- review parental controls, ad blocking, security services, and guest isolation;
- contact the ISP or router administrator.
Do not copy random DNS addresses into a router as a first step. A manual change can bypass household controls, create privacy differences, or make diagnosis harder.
9. Check Fire TV software and time
From Settings → My Fire TV or Device & Software → About, check for a system update after connectivity returns. An incorrect device clock can also break secure connections and account authentication, so use automatic date and time where available.
Amazon advises keeping connected-device firmware current. If an update itself fails, Amazon’s update troubleshooting directs users to test the Network screen, restart the network equipment, restart Fire TV, and confirm sufficient storage.
10. Separate one-app failures
If Fire TV Home and other apps work, the internet connection is not completely down. For the affected app:
- verify the service on another device;
- check subscription and regional availability;
- force stop and reopen it;
- clear its cache;
- update or reinstall only after recording login details.
Our Fire TV cache guide explains the difference between Clear Cache and Clear Data. Clearing data can sign you out and remove local configuration.
11. Measure speed at the Fire TV
Some Network Status implementations include a speed test. Otherwise test on a phone beside the Fire TV using the same Wi-Fi.
Our streaming internet-speed guide recommends planning roughly 8–10 Mbps per 1080p stream and 25 Mbps per 4K stream, plus household headroom. A connection can be online but too unstable for the requested resolution.
When to contact the ISP, router vendor, or Amazon
Contact the ISP when multiple devices lose internet, modem status shows an outage, or Fire TV works on another network.
Contact the router or network administrator when Fire TV alone is blocked by device controls, guest isolation, security modes, or access lists.
Contact Amazon/device support when Fire TV fails on multiple known-good networks after restart and update checks, or its Network Status repeatedly reports a local device fault.
Provide the device model, Fire TV software version, Network Status result, affected apps, approximate time, and whether another network worked. Do not share Wi-Fi passwords, Amazon credentials, or private streaming URLs.
Frequently asked questions
Why does Firestick say connected but no internet?
It has joined the router, but the router may not reach the ISP or DNS. Network Status distinguishes those links.
Should I restart the modem or router first?
Disconnect both, then reconnect the modem first and wait for internet service before powering the router, following Amazon’s sequence.
Will forgetting Wi-Fi delete my apps?
No. It removes the saved network profile. You will need the Wi-Fi password to reconnect.
Why does Fire TV work on my hotspot but not home Wi-Fi?
That result points toward the home router, filtering, DNS, security compatibility, or ISP path rather than a total Fire TV radio failure.
Should I factory-reset Fire TV for Wi-Fi problems?
Not initially. Prove the issue survives restarts, network checks, reconnection, and a second network before considering a destructive reset.
