Firestick Keeps Restarting? Fix the Reboot Loop Safely

Last verified: August 3, 2026. I checked Amazon’s current Fire TV power, restart, logo-screen, software-update, safety, app, cache, Auto Offload, reset, and device-identification guidance linked below. Reboot loops can have different causes, so power and accessory checks come before a factory reset.

Reviewed by Start2Watch on August 2, 2026.

If your Firestick keeps restarting, check the power adapter, USB cable, wall outlet, and temperature before changing apps or resetting the device. A Fire TV that reboots before reaching the home screen is more likely to need power or startup troubleshooting than an app-cache fix.

Use the adapter and cable supplied for the Fire TV model when possible. Amazon says included accessories ensure enough power, a longer substitute cable can reduce delivered power, and a device that becomes hot to the touch should be unplugged and allowed to cool for a few minutes.

Do not factory-reset Fire TV as the first test. A factory reset removes account information and downloaded content. Work through the non-destructive checks below first.

Identify the restart pattern first

What you observeBest first test
Fire TV repeatedly returns to the logo before the home screenIncluded power adapter and cable, wall outlet, temperature
A low-power or insufficient-power message appearsEvery power connection, original/compatible adapter, original or shorter cable
Fire TV stays on until one downloaded app opensRestart device, then troubleshoot that app's cache, data, update or installation
Logo remains after an update or startupKeep reliable power connected and allow Amazon's 25-minute startup window
Screen briefly goes black but the logo does not returnHDMI input, cable, port, hub or display path rather than a confirmed reboot
Device is unusually hot to the touchUnplug, let it cool for a few minutes, and correct heat exposure or blocked airflow
Reboots continue with known-good power and no accessoriesUpdate software when possible, then consider support, factory reset or hardware failure

Do not infer a reboot from every black screen. A real restart normally returns through the Fire TV logo or startup sequence. An HDMI interruption can make the picture disappear while the Fire TV itself remains running.

1. Check the complete power chain

Power is the first priority when the device restarts before the home screen, under load, or as soon as an app begins playback.

Use the supplied adapter and cable

Amazon's startup and logo guidance says to use the power cord or adapter included with the device. If a substitute adapter is necessary, it must meet the power requirements on the specific Fire TV product page.

Avoid powering a Fire TV Stick from a television USB port while diagnosing a reboot loop. Use the model's wall adapter unless the product documentation explicitly supports a different arrangement.

Reseat every connection

  1. Disconnect Fire TV power.
  2. Inspect the adapter and cable for visible damage.
  3. Reconnect the cable firmly at the Fire TV and adapter.
  4. Plug the adapter directly into a known-working wall outlet.
  5. Test the outlet with another suitable electrical item, or move Fire TV to an outlet already known to work.

Stop using any adapter or cable that is damaged, wet, unusually hot, frayed, bent at the connector, or producing an unstable connection. Amazon's safety guidance says to discontinue use when the adapter or cable appears damaged.

Test the cable length

Amazon says a longer substitute cable can reduce the power delivered to the device. If the original adapter is connected to a different or unusually long cable, test with the supplied cable or a confirmed compatible shorter replacement.

Do not buy a higher-wattage adapter blindly. Match the Fire TV model's requirements and approved accessories.

2. Let an overheated Fire TV cool safely

A Fire TV Stick may become warm during normal use. Amazon's safety guidance says that if it becomes hot to the touch, unplug it and let it cool for a few minutes before handling.

  1. Disconnect the power adapter.
  2. Allow the device to cool naturally for a few minutes.
  3. Move it away from radiators, heater vents, stoves, direct sunlight, or other heat-producing equipment.
  4. Make sure it is not tightly enclosed behind equipment that traps heat.
  5. Reconnect only when the adapter, cable, and Fire TV are dry and undamaged.

Do not use a hair dryer, refrigerator, freezer, ice pack, or other external heating or cooling method. Do not open or disassemble the Fire TV.

If the device repeatedly becomes unusually hot in an ordinary indoor setup, disconnect it and contact Amazon device support rather than continuing a heat-and-restart cycle.

3. Remove accessories that can confuse the diagnosis

An HDMI problem usually causes a missing picture rather than a true reboot, but the symptoms can look similar from the sofa.

Temporarily simplify the setup:

  • connect Fire TV directly to the television instead of through an HDMI hub or switch;
  • try the supplied HDMI extender both connected and removed when the model includes one;
  • choose a different television HDMI port;
  • confirm that the television remains on the correct input;
  • remove unsupported USB accessories or storage while diagnosing power instability.

If the screen goes black but audio continues or Fire TV responds to the remote without showing the startup logo, use the Firestick no-signal guide instead of treating it as a restart loop.

4. Perform one controlled restart

When Fire TV remains responsive long enough to reach Settings, Amazon's standard path is:

Settings → My Fire TV → Restart

Amazon also says the device can be restarted by unplugging the power cord or adapter and reconnecting it after three seconds. For an app-specific crash, Amazon separately recommends unplugging the adapter for one minute before reconnecting.

Use a controlled restart once, then observe what happens. Repeatedly unplugging the device every few seconds can interrupt startup or an update and makes the pattern harder to diagnose.

A restart is non-destructive. It does not remove apps or account information. The Fire TV restart and factory-reset guide explains the difference.

5. Allow a startup or update to finish

If the device is sitting on the Fire TV logo rather than visibly cycling through repeated restarts, Amazon says to leave it powered on for 25 minutes or until the screen changes.

For a logo that remains static throughout that wait, use our Firestick stuck-on-logo guide for the focused HDMI, port, display, and reset sequence.

During that window:

  • use a stable wall outlet and the correct adapter and cable;
  • do not repeatedly disconnect power;
  • do not begin a factory reset just because progress is not visible;
  • watch for an actual return to the logo that would confirm a cycle rather than a long startup.

Use the 25-minute guidance for a logo or startup state, not as a universal timer for every black screen. If the device remains on the logo after the wait, Amazon recommends checking connections and then treating factory reset as a later step.

6. Install the current Fire TV software update

If Fire TV reaches and stays on the home screen long enough to navigate, check for the current system update:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select My Fire TV or Device & Software.
  3. Select About.
  4. Select Check for System Update.

Keep reliable power and internet connected while the update downloads and installs. Do not unplug the device during installation.

If the reboot loop prevents access to Settings, do not invent a manual update procedure. Complete the power and temperature checks, allow the startup window, and contact Amazon support when the device cannot remain running.

7. Troubleshoot an app only when the pattern points to it

If Fire TV is stable on the home screen and restarts or crashes only after one downloaded app opens, the app becomes a reasonable suspect. That is different from a device that reboots before any app can run.

Amazon's current app troubleshooting order includes:

  1. Restart Fire TV.
  2. Open Settings → Applications → Manage Installed Applications.
  3. Select the affected app.
  4. Clear its cache.
  5. Clear app data only if necessary and after understanding that sign-ins or app settings may be removed.
  6. Uninstall and reinstall the app if the fault continues.

Do not clear every app's data as a generic reboot-loop fix. Use the Firestick cache guide to distinguish cache from app data.

If the app was sideloaded, confirm that it is compatible with the Fire TV model and software version and that it came from a source you trust. Remove an app that is damaged, unsupported, or requesting unrelated permissions.

8. Check available storage when Fire TV is stable

Low storage can contribute to update and app problems, but it is not the first explanation for a device that never reaches the home screen.

Open Settings → My Fire TV or Device & Software to display available storage. Under Applications → Manage Installed Applications, remove unused apps or clear cache selectively.

Amazon's current storage features vary by model:

  • storage optimization may clear the cache of an app unused for more than 30 days when storage is low;
  • Auto Offload may remove the installed portion of eligible apps unused for 60 days while retaining login information and settings;
  • some Fire TV Cube models can move supported apps to compatible USB storage;
  • external-storage support differs across Fire TV generations.

Do not purchase external storage until the exact Fire TV model and supported format are confirmed. If the interface is slow but not rebooting, use the slow Fire TV diagnostic.

9. Use factory reset only after the safer tests

A factory reset removes account information and downloaded content, including in-app purchases stored on the device. Amazon says to safely eject expandable storage first when applicable.

When Fire TV remains responsive, use:

Settings → My Fire TV → Reset to Factory Defaults

The remote shortcut is Back + Right side of the navigation circle held together for 10 seconds. An on-screen prompt allows continuation or cancellation, but Amazon warns that the device can reset automatically after several more seconds if no option is selected.

Do not use the shortcut while merely experimenting with remote buttons. Confirm that backups, account access, Wi-Fi details, and app sign-ins are available before proceeding.

Factory reset is justified only after correct power, cable, outlet, temperature, startup wait, system update, and relevant app/storage checks fail—or when Amazon support specifically instructs it.

When the Fire TV may need service or replacement

Contact Amazon device support when:

  • the adapter or cable is damaged;
  • the Fire TV becomes repeatedly hot to the touch in a safe setup;
  • the device reboots with the supplied adapter and cable in more than one known-good outlet;
  • the startup loop continues after the official logo wait;
  • the device cannot stay on long enough to update or reset;
  • a factory reset completes but the restart loop returns before third-party apps are installed;
  • there is evidence of liquid, impact, burning smell, unusual noise, or connector damage.

Do not continue using hardware that appears unsafe. Warranty and service eligibility depend on the device, purchase date, seller, territory, and cause of failure.

Avoid these common mistakes

  • Do not treat every HDMI blackout as a confirmed reboot.
  • Do not power the device from an underpowered television USB port during diagnosis.
  • Do not keep using a visibly damaged adapter or cable.
  • Do not cool the device with liquid, a freezer, or forced heat.
  • Do not clear all app data when the device restarts before apps load.
  • Do not interrupt a possible update every few seconds.
  • Do not factory-reset before understanding the data loss.
  • Do not assume one adapter specification fits every Fire TV generation.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my Firestick keep restarting at the logo?

Start with the supplied power adapter and cable, a known-good wall outlet, and temperature. If the logo remains static rather than cycling, Amazon says to leave the device powered on for 25 minutes or until the screen changes.

Can a television USB port make Firestick restart?

An inadequate power source can prevent reliable startup. During diagnosis, use the Fire TV model's supplied wall adapter and cable instead of assuming the television USB port provides enough power.

Will clearing cache stop a Firestick reboot loop?

Only when the device is stable and the problem follows one app is app cache a strong next step. Cache is not the first fix for a Fire TV that restarts before reaching the home screen.

How long should I unplug Firestick?

Amazon's standard restart page says to reconnect after three seconds. Its downloaded-app troubleshooting page uses a one-minute unplug. A longer pause is also appropriate when the device is hot and needs to cool naturally.

Will a factory reset fix repeated restarts?

It may repair a persistent software problem, but it erases account information and downloaded content and cannot repair damaged power hardware. Use it only after the non-destructive power, heat, startup, update, app, and storage checks.

Should I replace the power adapter?

Replace it only when damage or testing supports that conclusion, and verify the replacement meets the exact Fire TV model's power requirements. Stop using a damaged adapter or cable immediately.
